STAGE 1:

The Wall

For the first part of the subject assignment, we were tasked to design a single skin, continuous 110mm wide brick wall, to be located in Fawkner Park, Melbourne, while exploring the art and craft of brickwork. The designed wall features a large curve that continues into a straight wall. In the curve, there is a 795W X 860H opening and brick patterning to allow light to come through during dawn.

STAGE 2:

The Deck

After designing the wall, we were asked to design a 36sqm timber deck, that relates to our brick wall. To understand the concept of timber framing, we referred to the Timber Queensland’s Technical Data Sheet on Commercial Timber Decks. In the process of doing so, I learned the characteristics of the different types of timbers and explored the principles of strength, span and spacing and how stumps, bearers, joists are used to support a timber deck

STAGE 3:

The Seat

For this stage, we were asked to design a seat to be placed above the deck using a combination of 2 different materials. The materials chosen were timber (35 x 45 tallowwood) and steel (8 x 50 flat steel bar). Hot rolled flat steel bars were used because they could be bent and welded together, and timber was used as cladding to match the overall aesthetic of the deck, and also to provide thermal comfort for the users.
