THE
Brief
The brief of the studio was to design social housing project for a middle-ring suburb in Melbourne, namely Preston, through the design of multi-unit dwelling buildings, and characterized by demographic changes, economic pressures, and diversified ways of living.
THE
Project
nest: (n) a place of retreat, rest or lodging; to fit inside a larger one.
A housing project for women that:
1. Is safe and private
By separating public and private spaces, and by allowing residents to have control over the degree of visual access into private spaces through the use of operable shading devices, landscaping, and shared balcony spaces that offer passive surveillance.
2. Is affordable
By designing modular units with only the basic services to allow customization of spaces, and by the provision of shared amenities and shared recreational facilities.
3. Is adaptable
By ensuring spatial generosity and providing the units with an extra nook that can be utilized according to the residents’ spatial demands.
4. Is independent and convenient
By the design of a mixed-use development with shops and amenities catered to women (e.g. childcare) to equip them with daily necessities and promote a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
5. Fosters a sense of community
To be nested in a home means to have a safe and supportive environment for people to grow and thrive in. Nested aims to create a place for women to call home: more than just a physical space, but a place of personal sanctuary, a place where women can feel safe, secure and supported as they work towards reaching their maximum potential.
