ACCORDING
to context
Throughout my bachelor studios, we have always been tasked to begin a project by conducting a research, which involves analyzing the site that we will be working with, and also its surrounding contexts, both seen and unseen. In my second-year studio (design studio Gamma), we completed a research and analysis of the urban, morphological and ecological aspects of the site. During my first few semesters, I did not understand why we would always have one submission dedicated to research and analysis, instead of starting a project by designing right away. But eventually, I discovered and understood the importance of doing site analysis. By doing so, we are able to clearly understand the context of the site and project and using information that was found through research can actually inform the design decisions and can help formulate a logic and reasoning for the design. Most importantly, research helps create designs that are suitable for the context.
MINIMALIST
aesthetic
One thing that remains consistent throughout all my design projects is the use of a minimal color and material palette. In my project for Design Studio Delta, the facade was entirely white, and decorated with vertical steel profiles that were also white. In my project for Design Studio Epsilon, the exterior of the houses were white and it was complimented with a soft-colored timber. While others may think that it looks simple, boring, or as if not a lot of thought has been put into it, I admire the way neutral colors, simple forms and minimal material palette can altogether work create a feeling of elegance and 'clean' into the design. Aside from that, designing with a minimalist approach also ensures that the core function of the space and the programs within it become the focus of the project.
USABILITY
and comfort
Good design to me is one that is efficient and functional, one that can carry the tasks envisaged for it. Usability is therefore something that I always take into consideration when designing something. We should strive to design spaces that are comfortable and accessible for the users because I believe that spaces need to be designed and detailed carefully because it will impact the overall user experience in the space. Based on my personal experience, I visited a nice building once during a trip with my family. I was in awe of the design of the space but when it was time to take the stairs, the risers of the stairs were designed to be way too high and it made the walk feel uncomfortable. Despite the beautiful architecture of the space, I left with a bad impression, merely because of poor detailing. Therefore, usability, in every aspect of the design, is something that we as designers should always take into consideration.
